New program offers free tuition for many SKYCTC programs
When it comes to getting a college education, one major concern for most people is the cost. Many simply can’t afford to further their education, but thanks to a new scholarship, money will no longer be a problem for certain Kentuckians who want to become more marketable and increase their earning potential. The Work Ready Kentucky Scholarship provides free tuition for several Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKYCTC) programs.
On May 24, Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Sec. Hal Heiner announced details about the Work Ready Kentucky Scholarship (WRKS), which will help thousands of Kentuckians become more marketable in the workplace. The scholarship provides free tuition for programs in five fields that are considered high-wage, high-demand in Kentucky. Those fields are health care, advanced manufacturing, transportation/logistics, business services/information technology and construction/trades.
Kentucky residents who have not earned a college degree are eligible for the scholarship towards the completion of a certificate or diploma in one of the five fields. To be eligible for the scholarship, the individual must have earned a high school diploma or GED.
SKYCTC offers numerous programs in the fields eligible for the WRKS.
“Obtaining great paying careers can be accomplished with short-term training in less than four months through a SKYCTC industry recognized certificate,” said SKYCTC President Dr. Phillip Neal.
Information about all programs eligible for the Work Ready Kentucky Scholarship can be found at workreadykentucky.com. The scholarship will be administered by the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority and students must file a Free Application for Financial Aid (FAFSA) before applying for the WRKS. The FAFSA form is available at www.fafsa.gov and the WRKS application can be found at www.kheaa.com.
